About Twin Tide

We started Twin Tide for the kids who get lost in a big class.

Both of us grew up in swim programs, and we kept seeing the same thing: a lineup of children along the wall, a few minutes of attention each, and a nervous swimmer who finishes the session no braver than when they started. We wanted to teach the other way around.

Twin Tide Swim Co. is small on purpose. One or two instructors, one or two families, and a quiet backyard pool rather than a loud public facility. Every lesson is built around your child's age, their ability in the water, how confident they feel that day, and what you are hoping they will be able to do by the end of the week.

  • Lessons tailored to each child rather than a fixed class plan
  • Calm, familiar backyard water with no crowd and no echo
  • The same two instructors every session, so trust actually builds
  • Honest feedback for parents on what your swimmer is working on

Meet your instructors

The two of us, every lesson

You will not be handed off to a rotating roster. Tayelyn and Annika teach every session themselves.

Tayelyn Turnbull, co-founder and swim instructor

Tayelyn Turnbull

Certified swim instructor, co-founder

  • National Lifeguard
  • Swim for Life affiliate

Tayelyn is the one who gets the shy swimmers grinning. She is patient with first-time floaters, big on celebrating small wins, and keeps every lesson moving so nobody gets cold or bored. As a Swim for Life affiliate, her lessons follow a recognised Manitoba swim program.

“The moment a kid who was clinging to the wall on Monday lets go and floats on their own is the whole reason I do this.”

Annika Penner, co-founder and swim instructor

Annika Penner

Certified swim instructor, co-founder

  • Bronze Cross

Annika loves the technical side: cleaning up a front crawl, fixing a sinking kick, building the endurance that turns a swimmer into a confident one. Her backyard pool is home base for most of our lessons, so she knows exactly how to set up a good session in it.

“I love watching a child realise they can do something this week that they genuinely could not do last week.”

What families say

My three year old son got more out of the one week with Taye than the private one on one swim lessons at the private swim school. Taye is very patient and wonderful with the kids. She keeps them all engaged and is very professional. My son enjoyed the lessons so much, I've signed him up for another week in August. The pool is great for small kiddos, as it has a very shallow area with areas the kids can sit and stay safe.

Both ladies are so happy and positive, which is great for building a rapport with the kids, and both of mine immediately absolutely loved them! They are encouraging for the kids, but also correct technique and are good at finding different ways of explaining to the kids how to be successful at a skill. Which is exciting for me as a parent, after years of leisure guide lessons where the kids get an attempt at something, are totally lost and can't do it at all, but get no feedback or corrections, so they can never get better. These girls correct and give the kids feedback after each skill, but they do it in such a kind and fun way that the kids don't feel attacked or like they are failing. And they are really patient. Both of mine were struggling with listening, and both ladies kept directing them to the expected behaviour. Both kids are absolutely loving it and come home incredibly proud of the new skills they are gaining. They brag about all the “really hard special stuff” they learned. I would happily book with them again!

Taye is a certified instructor through the Lifesaving Society and offers private and semi-private swimming lessons. She is professional, patient, and absolutely fantastic with kids. Our kids have never enjoyed swimming lessons in the past, but they had so much fun with Taye and are already asking when their next session starts! If you're looking for a great swim instructor who connects well with kids and makes learning to swim fun, I can't speak highly enough about her!

I second this review. Taye is fantastic! The kids loved having her and improved so much in a week. She is so great, they had a blast.

We echo this review too! Taye was incredible with my apprehensive little guy and by the end of the week his confidence was overflowing! So much progress in a short time and she connected so easily with them. She's perfect for this job!! Highly recommend!

FAQs

Questions parents ask us

Anything we have not covered here, just ask. We are happy to talk it through before you book.

What ages do you teach?

Ages 2 to 12. That runs from toddlers taking their very first supported floats through to older kids sharpening a front crawl.

Do you offer private lessons?

Yes. Private lessons are one swimmer with one instructor for the whole session, 30 minutes a lesson, five lessons Monday to Friday, at $180 per week.

Do you offer semi-private lessons?

Yes, and it is our most popular option. Semi-private takes two or three swimmers of a similar level, 45 minutes a lesson, five lessons Monday to Friday, at $135 per week per swimmer. Siblings, cousins, and neighbour friends often book together.

Where do lessons take place?

Most lessons run at Annika's outdoor backyard pool in south Winnipeg. We also travel to families' own outdoor pools across the south end, with a two hour minimum booking for those visits. A single lesson is 30 or 45 minutes, so that minimum is usually covered by running a few lessons back to back, which is why neighbouring families often share a visit.

How long are lessons?

Private lessons are 30 minutes and semi-private lessons are 45 minutes. A week is five lessons, one each day from Monday to Friday. That daily rhythm is deliberate: swimming clicks much faster when a child is back in the water the next day instead of a week later.

What should my child bring?

A swimsuit, a towel, and a swimmer ready to go. That is genuinely it. If your child uses a life jacket or goggles they are comfortable in, bring those along too.

What happens if the weather is too cold?

These are outdoor pools in Manitoba, so the weather gets a say. We do not teach through thunder, lightning, or conditions that are not safe or comfortable for your swimmer. If we have to call a lesson off, we will get in touch to reschedule.

What if my child is nervous around water?

That is one of the main reasons families come to us. A quiet backyard pool with one or two swimmers is a much gentler place to start than a busy facility. We go at your child's pace, start with getting comfortable rather than with skills, and build from there. Nervous first-timers are completely normal and very welcome.

Do you teach beginners?

Yes, including children who have never been in a pool before. Lessons start wherever your swimmer actually is, and the first sessions with a true beginner are about getting in happily, blowing bubbles, and learning that water is fun.

How do I book?

Fill in the booking form below with your swimmers, where you would like to swim, and the days that work for you. We read every request and reply personally with the lesson options we have available. You can also send us a message on Instagram if that is easier.

Does a parent need to stay?

Yes. Whether the lesson is at our pool or yours, we ask that a parent or guardian stays for the whole lesson.

When does your season run?

Our main season is June through August. If spring is warm we may open up in May as well, so it is worth asking. Outdoor pools and Manitoba weather decide that one for us.
